Letter From Our President

Summer finally arrived when temperatures soared to the 70's and 80's the first week of July. After two days of heat, our flower garden burst into bloom, and vegetable plants showed noticeable growth. On July 12th there was a zucchini blossom, but that same day I saw Fireweed in bloom. My immediate reaction to the sight of blooming Fireweed was, "Oh, no! Summer just arrived and already there is Fireweed. Summer is over!". Well, not quite, but it does signal that autumn is coming.

On the 12th I drove to Henry Nutting's in Perham for the AARA radio club picnic. There were two young foxes in the field below Henry's barn. I watched one stretch, roll, and look curiously at me with ears straight up. I actually got quite close to it. Later the other fox came and everyone was watching the twosome.

Dave Berry, KB1EBE, was at the picnic. He was interested in hearing that the slinky antenna that KB1OWW made from the slinkies Dave had donated to the Scotch Auction at the AARA spring social was getting good results. Dave had a new type of antenna he had put together. It had four radials and had a hanging loop at the top. He said it was for fox hunting but he uses it for his HT.

Report of July 8th 2008 SJVARA Meeting

Start Time: 18:03
Members and guests present: N1FG, K1FTK, W1TCP, KA1SJV, KB1OWW, N7GLR, KA7VNR, and N1EVO.

Treasurer's Report: N1FRX:
April Balance $2848.09
Checking account $134.08
Savings Account: $2740.66 + $2.59 interest = $2743.25 Total of both=$2877.33
Old Business:
1. Rocky Mt.: Rocky Mountain repeater voltage 13.75 volts at 14:00 hrs July 8. N1EVO hopes to go up to Rocky Moutain July 12 or 13. ( Don't know if he did or not.) There was a brief discussion about moving the repeater to St. Francis. Before we do, tests of coverage must be done.
2. 146.640 Repeater: 13.99 volts at 14:00 hrs July 8. N1FG requested help to get the charger disconnected. KB10WW and N1EVO will come later next week.

3. Field Day Report: N1QMC, N1JHD, and N1FG went to St. Jacques about 3:00 o'clock on Saturday June 28. The Edmundston Club was still getting organized. There was one radio and a G5RV sloping from a tree to the ground. They said it was not doing very well. I heard New England stations and was able to make one contact before we left.
New Business:
1. Radio Test with W1TCP: N1FG wanted to determine if the fading signals on 146.640 were caused by her base station or the repeater. W1TCP agreed to test with me. First on an HT, then on the base, then on the HT again. The signal fades after the repeater has been in operation for awhile. The fading signals were apparent with both the HT and the base radio. KB1OWW suggested low water in the batteries. N1EVO suggested cleaning the terminals again.
2. Picnic: Our picnic will be Saturday, August 2. Cross Lake. 11:00 AM ( Rain date, Sunday August 3.)

3.Other: KB1OWW said 10 meters was open between 3 & 4 pm a few days ago.

PROGRAM: K1FTK told us that setting up PSK31 for listening is simple. Setting up for transmit is more complex. There is a DVD on setting up PSK 31 that K1FTK provided. N1FG has it now. If anyone else wants it, let her know.
N7GLR motioned to adjourn the meeting. W1TCP seconded the motion, accepted by all. Adjourned at 18:50

Next Meeting: Saturday August 2, Cross Lake Picnic, 11:00 AM.

ARRL's Third Public Relations Campaign

The July copy of QST has a descripton of the third PR campaign of the ARRL triology. The three campaign themes are Fellowship, Public Service, and Technology. The ARRL says that if non-hams are asked what it is about Amatuer Radio that interests people, the answers usually fall into one three categories.

1. The fun, friendship and hobby side

2. The emergency service side

3. The technology and creative side

"There's something about hams that makes them want to open the plastic box and see what's inside every gizmo they encounter. What makes it work? How can we make it better or even use it in a whole new way? It is this inquisitive and creative streak that is the third component in the ARRL Public Relations campaigns."

The new PR campaign was unwrapped at the Dayton Hamvention."The coordinated PR effort shows the world the technological activities and creative imaginations that Amatuer Radio's people love.

The campaign has several interlocking parts. There are Public Service Announcements for radio station airing found on the ARRL website. There is a new brochure available from http://www.arrl.org/brochures/

A new website has been created for this campaign. The website is http://www.wedothat-radio.org/ The website use newer technologies that allow easy topic additions and changes and even allows visitors to ask questions.

There are also a bunch of stickers available while the supply lasts.

There is a CD "Talk on a Disk", highlighting technology and coordinated with the brochures. It contains all the materials for a person to make a good Power Point presentation. It might be a good thing to do with scouts or school groups. Contact apitts@arrl.org if you want to do a presentation.

A Bit of Humor
Mixed up Metaphors:Collected by R. Lederer
* "We put all our heads together and shot from the hip. * "As easy as taking candy from a drowning man." * "There's more than one way to skin a goose." * "Take the bull and run with it." * "At least we are not standing around on our thumbs. Cher came out with this one: "I've been up and down so many times that I feel as if I'm in a revolving door."
