Letter From Our President Dear Fellow Hams, N1QUAL, Rick, checked into our net on July 17th. He was driving his empty 18 wheeler on Rte. 162, preparing to pick up a load of potatoes for long distance hauling. By the way, the net on the 17th was at our new summer hour, 20:30. There were a lot more check ins than at 19:30. Also, N1QHW, Joe, was up here using the repeater the week before the 17th. I had several interesting conversations with him. He lived up here 50 years ago and was retracing his roots. He secured a lot of helpful information from W1TCF. I wish more people would keep their meter radios on .64. How many traveling hams do we miss, I wonder?

The July meeting was
held at my house. No one seemed to have any trouble finding it. A wooden
bear population exists just before the turn into our long "driveway"! We
had plenty to eat. Then we had a look at N7GLR's log on disc . Now there is
someone who gets around the world on his Butternut antenna. He has made
contacts from Moscow to Africa and lots of places in between, and places I
have never heard of. We had a short meeting, and it was suggested that the
next meeting be at the Flagg residence. Does anyone object? We also had a
short explanation on the life history of dragon and damsel flies.

Report Of July SJVARA Meeting Called to Order: 20:20 by N1UYA Old Business: Rocky Mountain Report: Batteries are well charged. Needs at Rocky Mountain Site work on cabin: painting, replacing windows and new roof. N1FRX will donate metal roofing and screws. It should be caulked when putting it on for long lasting results. We need a work crew with a chain saw, brush cutter, and pruners to widen the entrance road and clean out the trail up the mountain. If we can get a crew of 4 0r 5 together, we should be able to do the work in a half day or less. Please, we need help with this. Contact N1UYA |
N1JHD offered
to clear the brush at the .64 repeater. N1UYA will help him (Note: N1JHD and
son have completed this job. Many Thanks.
New Business: New Secretary is needed, as Miles has left. Still no volunteers. It was decided, by consensus, that one hour later for our weekly net would be good. The SJVARA net will now be held at 8:30 (20:30). August meeting: It was suggested that the August meeting be held at N1UYA's again. A pot luck supper with the meeting afterward. Next meeting: MON 07 August 2000, 18:00 EDST Flagg House Adjourned @ 20:35 EDST by N1UYA with no objection from the floor. Program: N7GLR's LOG , and a brief introduction to the life history of Dragonflies and Damselflies. Submitted by: N1UYA

Lighthouses and Lightships http://www.waterw.com/~weidner/lh-ham.htm#2. For a list of participating stations in both events (updated daily): http://www.waterw.com/~weidner/LH-day-table.htm The events last year were very popular. More than 200 lighthouse stations were on the air from 31 countries, with thousands of hams around the world making contacts with as many as they could. If you are really interested in Lighthouses, you can even join the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society or sign up for the Ham Radio Lighthouse newsgroups at: http://www.waterw.com/~weidner/arls.htmsfd N7GLR, will you try this and report to us at the next meeting? I would certainly like to try, if I can get my radio hooked up in time. I used to paint watercolor pictures of Maine Coast Lighthouses when I was growing up and we cruised along the coast of Maine.

A Neat Way To Store a Mobile Whip Antenna The June Qst has a the direction for making an antenna sheath for your mobile antenna. W6JXW tells how he made a case out of CPVC pipe, using adapters to join a 3/4" section for the antenna connector, to 1/2" pipe for the 6 foot whip. Screw caps are at both ends. He then hung it under his car, clear of the exhaust and the suspension system. It looks like a neat way to keep the antenna safe and out of the way. If you don't get QST, I'll give you a copy at the August meeting or request one by e-mail or phone. ********************************** Enjoy the month of August! |

A Bit of Humor Newspaper bloopers from Richard Lederer: Happy Buc fans ate 41,000 hot-dogs at a recent double-header drawing 32,346 fans. Also, 27,000 bags of peanuts, 26,000 ice cream bars, 30,00 soft drinks, 18,000 scorecards, and 7500 cushions. A twister roared through the area today, leaving three people dead and counting. |
