Letter From Our President

Dear Fellow Hams,
As I write this Feed-Point letter, there is a blizzard raging outside. The visibility is low because of blowing snow, the wind is strong, and the National Weather Service says if you must go out, take a survival kit with you!!  The temperature is only +3.0F.   This is real wintry stuff.
The new millennium seems to have started off with few problems. The hams who spent their New Year's Eve on duty in public service had time to celebrate because of a lack of Y2K problems. See page 3 for more about this.
I wonder how many of you saw the article in the Bangor Daily News entitled "New Timing System Aids NBA Refs--Device operates at the speed of light, eliminates human error at end of games." It was on a sport page. The system was created by Mike Costabile, an ex NBA referee and present NCAA referee and guess what his hobby is. Yes, he is a ham. He is WD4MGP, of Hillsboro, N.C. The system he developed , in part, is a cigarette pack sized computer belt pack that  will start the arena clock when the referees push a button on  the belt pack. The referees also wear a small microphone that is tuned to a specific whistle frequency. When the ref blows the whistle the clock stops. The signals directly to the clock move at the speed of light, helping to eliminate the slight delay when the court

side timekeeper starts or stops the clock.  In the beginning, interference was a problem from concession orders taken over radio.  The basketball refs say it is very helpful, especially when the timer's view is blocked by several players.

I have just started checking into a weather net on 145.130 weekdays at 06:30 our time. Net control is a cheery Mona, VE9MR. Even if you don't want to take part, it is good listening as weather reports are called in from all over the area covered by the International Repeater Group linked system. (Covered in Feed-Point ,VOL.9 N10).

Report  Of January SJVARA Meeting

Called to Order: 1845EDT by N1UYA

In Attendance: N1UYA, N1FCW, N1LON, KW1C, N8VJM, N1UYA.

Secretary's Minutes: Motion to waive reading  by N1LON,and  seconded by N1FCW.   Motion passed.

Treasurer's Report :  Balance $495.50 + $1.01 interest. New Balance $496.51.  Crystals ordered for .64 radio will probably be $32.50.
Report given to N1UYA by N1CHF, who had to be elsewhere.

Old Business:
Rocky Mountain Report (N8VJM / N1UYA): Ice on the solar panel which had been reducing the charging voltage is gone and batteries are at full charge.  Some undesired signals are occasionally reaching the repeater input because of a repeater on the same pair in Quebec.  A system is in place to reduce interference. Simply hit any DTMF tone before you speak.

Y2K Review: N1UYA reported that Y2K was pretty much a "non-event".

Weather Net (reminder): 145.130 0630EDT.

New Business:
Can-Am Communications: N1UYA announced that N8VJM will be coordinating communications for the Sled Dog Races again this year.

N1UYA will try to track down N1YGM who promised to be here in 2000.

Net Change: the SJVARA net will now be held at 1930EDT on Mondays, omitting the Monday set aside for club meeting.

Nominating Committee: Nominations  were taken from the floor for the committee to nominate candidates for club officers: N1UYA, KC1SE, N1CGV.

N1UYA appointed KW1C as field day comittee chairman.  KW1C suggested that we consider operating with the Aroostook Amateur Radio Association in Presque Isle as an alternative this year.

Next meeting :will be MON 6 Feb 2000, 1830 EST at UMFK, Grindle conference room.

Program: Milestones for the New Millennium and HT202 Battery Pack Replacement (by N1UYA).

Adjourned @ 1921EDT by N1UYA with no objection from the floor.

A letter from Mona Rideout, VE9MR:

On July 1st, 2000, at 1:00pm EST time, about 150 to 300 amateurs are getting together in Ste Perpetue de L'islet, in Quebec.  There will be probably a bingo in the afternoon, and for supper, there will be an Italian all you can eat buffet consisting of pizzas, lasagnas, spaghetti, et cetera. and the tea, coffee, and dessert are including in the after mentioned price.

After supper, there will be an Amateurs night, all people wishing to assist, and have a hidden talent they wish to demonstrate, whether it be singing, playing the harmonica,  guitar, et cetera.  After this, there will be a dance.

The price is 15$ for one person....$25 for a couple....and children under 12 eat for $5.  This includes the meal as I mentioned, and the dancing. Also for those who would rather golf than play bingo, there is a golf course close by but the price is not included herein.

There are motels close by , and camping grounds also.  If anyone is interested, I will receive the Motel rates and phone numbers soon so that the people can make their reservations in advance.  So far, we have people as far away as Campbellton, Shediac, and in Quebec and Montreal as well. A good 3/4 of the amateurs are bilingual.

 HAMS AND PUBLIC SERVICE

The following is a copy of the letter I, N1UYA,  received from the Port Director, U.S. Customs, Fort Kent, Maine on Jan. 20, 2000.

  "Dear Ms. Flagg,
It is with immeasurable gratitude that I submit this letter of appreciation for the work and dedication performed by members of your radio club. Your members went out of their way, sacrificing time and plans, so that we would be prepared in the event our regular communications became disabled due to  the Y2K conversion.
Your people went about their business with little fanfare and did what was needed to get us past the perceived Y2K problems.
On behalf of the U.S. Customs Service,  want to thank you and your radio club for your time and efforts.

Sincerely yours,
Charles C. Pelletier"

Those who helped the U.S. Customs service were N1CHF, N8VJM, N1LON, N1FCW, N1QMC, N1JHD, N1PMS, N1LOT, N1ZHP,KA1ZOE, W1TCF, W1BTP. Thanks to all of you for your time and efforts in setting up the stations in Ft. Kent, Madawaska, and Van Buren and in celebrating the New Year on duty at the radios.

Can-Am Dog Sled Races March 4-6.  Our Help will be needed.

  ROCKY MOUNTAIN REPORT

*NOTE WELL THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION*

The Rocky Mountain repeater is alive and well. However, a slight problem has arisen. Some Quebec radio station is causing interference, and the problem has been solved at the moment by requiring that a user hit any touch tone button with Push To Talk held down when trying to reach the repeater.  Thereafter, whenever the repeater ID's , you must repeat the procedure.
