Letter From Our President

The days of summer are flying by and there are so many things to do! This will be a short Feed-Point. An update on the water-lily plants the moose muched on. They were growing new leaves. However, one morning the pond was all riled up, young willow branches were floating all over it, and the water-lily plants were gone. Not a moose this time, but a wandering beaver. KA1OOW came to set a live trap for the beaver the next day. It was interesting to watch him prepare the "bedspring" trap. A bit of beaver castor was smeared on the willow branches wired to the frame. We all thought there would be a trapped beaver by morning. Next morning the pond was clear. No beaver. My thought is the young beaver smelled another beaver and figured it would not be a good place to set up housekeeping. Thanks to KA1OOW for his efforts.

You have all read on our web page that here in northern Maine, antenna work is considered an extreme sport. On our August 19th picnic we could have said that a picnic up here is an extreme sport. It was in the 50's, the wind was howling. Most were dressed warmly enough to stay warm. The four ladies tossed horseshoes for awhile. The food, as usual, was delicious and there was silence as we all dug into the tasty offerings. We shared some amusing stories, and had a brief meeting.

After the picnic, N1EVO and N1FG went to see WB1FTK's completed 160 meter antenna. We fully appreciated all the work done by WB1FTK and KA1SJV, with technical assistance from K1FK, to make the project a reality.

The University of Maine has sent me two letters asking the club to put a float in the Scarecrow Parade. The only thing I can think of is to set up a table, radio, and antenna in the back of a pickup, have operators dressed as scarecrows, and an SJVARA sign. Can we manage this? Anybody have another idea? It would be good if we could do this to give the public some exposure to the club.

I walked into a Mickey D's with a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for a sandwich. I handed it to the girl and she looked over at a little chalkboard that said "buy one-get one free." "They're already buy-one-get-one-free", she said, "so I guess they're both free" She handed me my free sandwiches and I walked out the door.
