Letter From Our President

 Dear Fellow Ham
Between July 19th and Aug. 21st we measured 9.44" of rain at my QTH. Water has been running down the gullies and hills just like it does when the snow melts.  A lot of projects have been on hold for a lot of people, I am sure. On the plus side, the gladiolus in the garden are taller and more colorful than ever before. The warm nights have caused wildflowers, such as Fireweed, to finish blooming earlier than usual, and have given us bumper crops of summer squash and pole beans.
The Phish concert had fairly good weather, but I understand  people were up to their knees in mud in places, and vehicles had to be pushed through mud. N1KGS and  KB1EBE operated net control center in shifts through out the weekend. KB1HZT was on duty at the East Gate. Fortunately there were no disasters.

Our August picnic meeting had to be postponed for a week from August 10 because of rain. August 17th was a nearly perfect day.  The white caps on Cross Lake restricted the canoeing somewhat. N1CHF got swept out into the windy area when he was alone in the canoe. It was a struggle to paddle up wind. After experimenting with methods of using two paddles, he hit upon the best solution. He overlapped the handles and used the two like a kayak paddle. He wished he had some duct tape!

As usual, there was plenty of good food. After we sated our hunger, some of us tried our hand at kayaking in KA7VNR's kayak. There were no tip-overs! We got organized for the meeting, but there was a waiting period, as we watched N1CHF in his struggles against the wind. When he got back, we started the meeting. (See page 2).
After the meeting, more canoeing, and horseshoes. Someone made the comment that you couldn't go home  till you got a ringer. N1QMC was first to do so, Stan Flagg next. N1JHD and N1FG made ringers, but not from the right distance!

Report of August 17th  2003 Meeting

Called to Order: 14:10
In Attendance:
N1FG, N1QMC, N1JHD, N1PMS, N7GLR, KA7VNR, Stan Flagg

Secretary's Minutes: N7GLR motioned to waive reading of the minutes. N1PMS seconded. Passed

Treasurer's Report: July Balance $955.18  Dues $12 + Interest $1.02 = August Balance  $968.20

Old Business:
1. Rocky Mountain Report: N1CHF Report:
Tomorrow N1CHF and N1JHD will got to Rocky Mountain and install two 8' by 2" angle irons on the side of the tower building. One high above the windows, the other along the base of the wall. These are the brackets that will hold the mast and the replacement antenna. We also discussed new batteries for Rocky Mountain. We need someone to carry the batteries up.  Will someone volunteer? Are there two boys wanting to get in shape for some sport?

2. 146.64 Report: N1FG replaced the Damp Aid on August 14th. The cup below it was filled with water. The cabinet itself was dry. It is possible because of the long rainy period, the building of the block house will have to be put off.

3. Dues DUE:  It was noted that several people have not yet paid dues. Go to www.qsl.net/ n1chf  to see if you still owe.

New Business:

 1. Good Job Steve: N1CHF has done a fine job on our club web page. If you have not looked at the photo album, you will enjoy taking a look and reading the commentary.   The Photo Album is excellent, and the comments fun.

2. E-mail from the Yankee Radio Club read.

3. Morse Code Dropped: Switzerland, Belgium, UK, and Germany have all dropped the Morse Code requirement for HF work. Canada is doing a survey of its amateurs before deciding.

4. Hams and the Big Blackout:  Hams with emergency power were on the air immediately helping with many aspects of that crisis, proving again the worth of Amateur Radio in communications.

5.Phish Concert and Aroostook Adventure Race
The ham radio organization sheets for both events were passed around. They are being saved for future reference.

6. N7GLR brought up the topic of a Life Membership for the Club. Let's give it some thought, have some feedback, think of a figure. We'll discuss it at the next meeting.

7. N1FG mentioned that a penalty of $413.74 has been assessed against the one acre .64 tower site for removing it from Tree-Growth.  (see page 3)

Adjourned:  N7GLR moved for adjournment at 14:41. N1QMC second. Passed.
 Submitted by:  N1FG

THE NET & REPEATER USE

We do still hold an Emergency Net every week on Monday at 19:00.  This is a good time to check that your radio is working and that you can get into the repeater. At our best, we get 10 check ins.  At our worst, which is more often that I wish it was, there is one check in. Please try to check in. I hope more people are monitoring than check in, so that if it was a real emergency we would be able to get  the help to cover the emergency situation.

Our 146.64 repeater has been used a lot this summer by KA1OOW and N1UYB. KA100W does beaver trapping for people who have problems with beavers. He is often on the back roads in Allagash.

MORE ON TAXES ON 146.640

Here is more on the tax situation for .64. The land it is on is on a piece registered with the Tree Growth Tax Law. Apparently when you take the land for any other use, whether it be for road building, ledge extraction etc., there is a penalty for removing the land from Tree Growth. This seems a little strange, since you do have to have roads for harvesting wood.
I spoke with Don Guimond and found out the following: If the tower was owned by a communications business it would not be taxed. There is no exemption for other towers. Guess I forgot to mention, the tower is also being taxed $106.00 a year. That is on a valuation of $3000, which I think is too high, so I will try to get that reduced. It does seem that ham radio towers should get a break!

For Sale

Heavy duty 40' galvanized steel tower, 16" x 16" x 16". Includes mounting hardware. Best Offer.

A Bit of Humor

Real Science Test answers from kids: * Q. How is dew formed? A. The sun shines down on leaves and makes them perspire. * Q. What causes the tides in the oceans? A. The tides are a fight between the Earth and the Moon. All water tends to flow towards the moon, because there is no water on the moon, and nature hates a vacuum. I forget where the sun joins in this fight.
