August 2000                                                          Vol.10 no.8

Letter From Our President

Dear Fellow Hams,
The August newsletter is late because my computer died for unknown reasons in the middle of August. I did not get it back until Monday, August 28, just after I returned from eight days of hiking in the Gaspe Mountains.

Now it is the first of September, the wind is blowing hard and warm. Remnants of a hurricane? Maybe. We had a frost up in the Gaspe one morning, and we traveled over a sizable snow patch on one of our long treks. We saw several large snow packs in the mountains. They are closer to winter than we are. We still have time for tower and antenna work.

While up on two of the highest mountains I tried to get into the International Repeater Group's Campbellton repeater, 147.390+ with the required tone sequence. I thought being up as high as we were on Mt. Albert I would be able to reach it. Maybe if I had had 50 watts, I could have, but no results with my handheld.

Nothing has been heard from N8VJM, so N1CHF has started working on a new Home Page for the club, and we are trying to figure out how to upload Feed-Point. Please bear with us in this transition period.

If anyone of you has experience with posting items on web pages, we would welcome your assistance. Especially as to having graphics turn out the same after posting as before!

The August meeting only had 3 members present, so we enjoyed a good supper and watched a movie. N1CGV, N1CHF, and N1UYA were the members present.

In Case You're Interested
Believe it or not, the FCC Wireless Bureau claims they have eliminated 99% of the paperwork backlog that has plagued them in the past. They claim the system now in place will prevent backlogs from developing in the future. In 1968 they had a backlog of 64,000 license applications, rule makings and other administrative items. The proliferation of wireless technology has resulted in more than 2 million licenses annually plus 400,000 other applications.

ARRL Certification and Continuing Education Program

This program is for licensees seeking challenges beyond those offered within the FCC licensing requirements.
The first program being developed by the ARRL members is one to assure that hams have the necessary skills to be effective
in emergency communications. Hardworking volunteers are putting together a program and those taking it will receive recognition. The September issue of QST does not say exactly when this will be available, but I suspect it will be soon.
The Big Project, ARRL's Amateur Radio Education Project is now seeking funding. Teachers have responded with interest at teacher's conventions, and individual and radio club volunteers have expressed a willingness to help.  Some publications are ready for teacher's bookshelves.  Much more is needed, thus the fund raising.

A Bit of Humor

Newspaper bloopers from Richard Lederer:
* At 15 Celsius, it was feared that people could not be stupid enough to
attend these winter games in such bitter cold. But once again Calgarians have proven the experts wrong.
* Beginning this semester, references to women in any of the Student Associations writing has been discontinued. ..Females will be referred
to in a new, improved non-sexist term: "Womyn". "The idea is to take 'men' out of ' women'", explained Central Council chairperson Jeff Banks.
