Letter From Our President

At long last the snow is disappearing. Almost daily skiis up to the tower have stopped because of bare spots and water on the south side of the hill. Now I ski on north-facing slopes. Coltsfoot are opening in the driveway ditches. Much to our surprise the driveway is clear with no gushing water on it. The ditches have been running hard. The greenhouse is in operation and nearly full of plants. Birds are singing.

Has anyone had any experience with the High Sierra Sidekick HF antenna? I saw an ad for them in the March QST. Looked interesting! If you know anything about them please contact me.

Minutes of April 8th SJVARA Meeting

Start Time: 18:00
Members and guests present: N1FG, W1TCP, N1FRX, KB1OWW, N7GLR, KA7VNR, and N1EVO.
This was a nomination and election meeting. It was briefly discussed by all present and a motion was made to nominate and elect the same officers who were elected last year, with the addition of KB1OOW as a co-technical advisor. Motion was made by N7GLR and seconded by KA7VNR and agreed upon by all by unanimous hand vote.
Treasurer's Report: Treasurer's report was read by N1FRX: Total of $2624.49 in savings and total of $114.08 in the checking account. Total of both=$2738.57. Motion to accept the treasure's account made by N1QMC and seconded by N7GLR. All voted to accept.
Old Business:
1. Rocky Mt.: Rocky Mountain repeater voltage 14.17, a bit high. Question asked about the cause of static in the morning. Frequency is drifting. Needs to be checked. The crystal oven was mentioned as the cause. KB1OOW and N1EVO will get on the Rocky Mountain repeater to bring the voltage down a bit.
2. 146.640 Repeater: The repeater is still hooked to the charger. It has a regulator on it and won't over charge. It was decided to leave it on the charger until we have more sun (Will that ever happen?).
3. Dues and Membership Cards: More members paid dues, and membership cards were handed out by N1FG.
4. Other: N1EVO has been investigating the contact person for the mountain in Saint Francis back settlement (to move 146.715 to) and was told to contact Lester Jandreau and Gene Berube. John Voisine volunteered to take club members up to the tower site on the groomer in the winter if needed .

N1EVO mentioned inexpensive QSL cards can be obtained in Fort Kent at PaperSigns Ink, 32 West Main Street.

New Business:
1. Trackers: N1FG mentioned that AA1XD said that if Can-Am wants to continue APRS tracking of officials, we need to think about buying our own trackers. He said he would put them together and program them. Something to think about for the future. Trackers could be used for bicycle and canoe events, too.

2. Program for May Meeting: N1FG asked for ideas for the May meeting. It was suggested that we discuss Field Day plans, field day protocol and contacting a Canadian club to join with us on field day.

3.Other: If a Laptop computers gets too hot, install fans under it. Taking the battery out when using AC will also help keep it cool.

N7GLR motioned to adjourn the meeting. N1FRX seconded the motion, accepted by all.
Meeting was adjourned at 18:35.

Now it was time for our pizza party. Carl volunteered to get the pizza from Bee-Jay's. The pizza, soda, dessert and great conversation were enjoyed by all.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, May 13, 6:00 PM, UMFK Nadeau Hall Alumni Conf Room,

Radio Trouble

"Well the Yaesu FT1000MP Mk V took a dump .... the A/B Antenna select switch and or circuitry worked on transmit only ... it would not switch to receive. Looked at repairing it but gave up after removing the covers. Quick online order to HRO for the Icom 756 Pro III on Wed morning and it arrived Fri afternoon!! The FT was a nice rig but the Pro III is much better. I've always had Icom since '74 and was hesitant getting the FT1000 but it was a closeout with a good price. I can still use it by using the Rx antenna port with the Beverage, but only on 160, 80 and 40 .... so it's going to be a backup for the 160 contests."

Antenna Trouble

KB1OWW reported that he was working on his antennas one by one. Guess they all were somewhat damaged by the unusual snow this winter. Anybody else doing repairs?
